Browns GM Andrew Berry had no qualms about trading for former Jets receiver Elijah Moore despite a few off-the-field transgressions, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Moore had a heated exchange last season with former Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur after not getting any targets in a victory over Green Bay — although sources say the outburst was mischaracterized. He also had to publicly apologize at Ole Miss after making like a dog urinating in the end zone after a touchdown in the Egg Bowl in 2019, which essentially cost them the game.
But Berry, who moved down from No. 42 in the second round to 74 in the third round to acquire Moore, didn’t hesitate for a second to add him to the receiver room as primarily a fast, slot receiver who can also play outside. In fact, he’s convinced he’s ‘absolutely’ mature enough to handle the demands of the job and the high expectations for the Browns this season. Berry’s good friend and colleague Joe Douglas, the Jets GM with whom Berry worked in Philadelphia, vouched for Moore’s character, as did coach Robert Saleh to his good friend Kevin Stefanski.
“We feel very good about Elijah,” Berry said Sunday afternoon at the NFL Annual Meeting at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. “Loves ball, hard worker. He’s a good teammate. This is a guy that despite some of the ups and downs in New York, and obviously we have a really good relationship with that organization, but we feel good about who Elijah is bringing him into our building and think he’s going to do well there.”
He acknowledged that Moore, 22, was the player he tried to trade for at the deadline last season.
“They were pretty adamant that they weren’t looking to move him (then),” Berry said.
