Rapoport: Aaron Rodgers plans to play for Packers in 2021 despite standoff

Aaron Rodgers “has indicated to people close to him that he does plan to play for [the Packers] this season.” according to Ian Rapoport of

Rapoport adds, however, that there are “many factors at play.”  One of those factors is likely whether the Packers will give him a contract that will back up CEO Mark Murphy's claim that the team is committed the Rodgers both for 2021 and beyond.  There are three years remaining on the four-year, $134 million contract extension Rodgers signed in 2018 but no guaranteed money after the 2021 season, meaning the Packers could at least theoretically move on from their mercurial QB next offseason.

If Rapoport's report is true, it would see to at least temporarily end the months-long stalemate between the reigning NFL MVP and the franchise he has been with for 16 seasons.  The 37-year-old Rodgers skipped the team's entire offseason workout program, including mandatory minicamp, for the first time in his career amid reports of his discontent with the Packers' front office.  Had Rodgers opted to refuse to report to training camp, he would have incurred a $50,000 fine for each day he missed.  Packers veterans are scheduled to report on Tuesday.
