Colts head coach Frank Reich has tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated, general manager Chris Ballard said Monday.

Reich has no symptoms, and Ballard believes that’s an indicator that the vaccine works, despite the breakthrough infection, Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports. Reich tested positive late last week and is not expected to be able to return until Aug. 2, according to Ballard.

There is no timeline on when Reich will be back.

“I’m excited for training camp, however I’m disappointed I won’t be there with the team as we start," Reich said in a statement. "I’m fortunate to be fully vaccinated, and I’m asymptomatic. I’m feeling well and I’m looking forward to returning as soon as I’m medically cleared.”

Colts will not name an interim coach. Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone will handle some of the on-field duties because he's a little more free during practice. Reich is still doing a lot of the work through Zoom.
