The Buffalo Bills suffered both a loss to the Cleveland Browns Thursday night and an extremely scary scenario in which rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel was forced to leave the game with a right knee injury. But perhaps the most disastrous night was had by Bills punter Shawn Powell who was repeatedly burned Thursday night and then fired on Friday morning according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com.
Powell punted eight times in Thursday night's loss to the Browns, averaging 45.5 yards per punt. He's taking the fall as the Bills' punt-coverage unit allowed Travis Benjamin to average 25.6 yards per return on seven tries including a 79-yard touchdown run. While Powell cannot be the only person to blame, Benjamin to set a single-game franchise record with 179 yards (good enough for 6th all time) against the Bills woeful punt coverage team. The Bills now have nine days to fill their punter vacancy.
