Saints linebacker Victor Butler tore his ACL during Tuesday's organized team activities practice, Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. This according to a source. Butler was a key free-agent signing during the offseason and figured to be a player to help the Saints' lackluster pass rush. Butler was on the first-team defense at outside linebacker, opposite Will Smith.
The source also said Butler will likely end up on injured reserve and Butler will have surgery once the swelling in his injured knee has subsided. This was the last week of OTAs for the Saints, and Wednesday's practice session was canceled so the players could take a field trip.
Coach Sean Payton briefly addressed Butler's injury after Tuesday's practice, saying running back Mark Ingram and Butler "banged knees." Payton also said he thought Butler would be fine and the Saints were fortunate it wasn't worse.
