Titans safety Michael Griffin has never played for Gregg Williams, but he thinks the currently suspended coach could be a good addition to a bad defense, John Glennon of the Tennessean reports.

The Titans are interested in hiring Williams for their defensive coaching staff, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not been reinstated him from an indefinite suspension for his role in the “Bountygate” program with the Saints.

Jerry Gray is expected to remain Titans defensive coordinator if Williams is added to the staff.

“If he comes, I know coach Gray has coached underneath him (in the past), so I don’t think it would be anything where two coaches bump heads trying to figure things out,” Griffin said. “Just watching the Saints play when they won the Super Bowl, and watching the way they played (under Williams) … and he’s been a coach here before. So he’d be able to bring all that together. I think it would help us in the long run.”

Griffin said he spoke last week to former Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan, now with the Rams, about Williams.

“(Finnegan) said Gregg Williams was a great coach and his son was a great coach also for the Rams,” Griffin said. “So I’m pretty sure, you put him and coach Gray together, we should be able to get things turned around.”
