Geno Smith kicks Giants when they’re down

Geno Smith and then head coach Ben McAdoo were part of one of the more ignominious moment in Giants history last season when McAdoo clumsily and abruptly benched Eli Manning, in favor of Smith, before a Week 13 game against the Raiders. Despite Manning’s faltering play and a 2-9 record, the way the move was handled was considered disrespectful to the veteran quarterback.

With the Giants off to a 1-5 start under new coach Pat Shurmur and the offense — with the exception of standout rookie Saquon Barkley — looking as stagnant as last season, Smith thinks an apology is due to McAdoo, Justin Terranova of the New York Post reports.

The fact that Smith was the one replacing Manning after his forgettable Jets tenure also did not sit right with Giants’ faithful. Smith was decent in his lone Giants start, completing 21-of-34 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown in the 24-17 defeat in Oakland, but his starting stint ended after McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese were fired the following day. Manning retained his starting quarterback job the following game.
