With the 2024 NFL Draft just weeks away, not everyone thinks USC quarterback Caleb Williams is the best this class has to offer, Larry Brown of USA Today's Ravens Wire reports. Will his heroics transition over well at the NFL level?

Surely Williams possesses superstar talent. He has a strong arm, the ability to scramble, leadership qualities, and tons of highlights reels where he performs the most improbable plays. However, many of Williams’s highlights do not give a strong indication of his decisiveness, timing, or pre-play awareness. Instead, his recurring heroics suggest that Williams may be in for a rude awakening in the NFL.

Williams dominated in the PAC 12 this season, tossing 30 touchdowns on 388 pass attempts in just 12 games played. That’s 32 pass attempts per game, a formula that only amounted to just an 8-5 record for USC. Moreover, all PAC-12 teams allowed opponents more than 220 passing yards per game, and most of Williams’ highlights were against lower-tiered NCAA teams.

Williams has shown a tendency to hold the ball in the pocket, that is sure to be problematic in the NFL. It’s unlikely that star NFL defensive players like Detroit Lions outside linebacker Aidan Hutchinson, Ravens’ defensive lineman Justin Madubuike, Dallas Cowboys Micah Parsons, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J Watt, and others, will let Williams dance around, and then launch miracle balls 50 yards down the field.

While Williams’s stats cannot be disputed, analysts like Matt Hasselback point to attributes like intuitiveness and pocket awareness as reasons to deem North Carolina prospect Drake Maye as the better option. Nevertheless, Williams will remain the poster boy for the 2024 NFL Draft as NFL scouts continue to soul-search before making their picks.
