Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott has made his decision on how to replace Leslie Frazier, who made the choice last month to step away from coaching this upcoming season, Matt Parrino of New York Upstate reports.

McDermott is taking over the defense.

Speaking at a table set up inside the McArthur Ballroom at the Phoenix Biltmore Hotel on Monday at the NFL’s annual meeting, McDermott declared once and for all that he’ll take over the play-calling duties following Frazier’s exit.

“I’m gonna be the play caller but at the same time, have tons of confidence in the guys that we have around me that if I need to toss it to them from time to time, I can do that,” McDermott said.

McDermott spent eight seasons as a defensive coordinator -- first for the Philadelphia Eagles and then for the Carolina Panthers. When thinking about the best path forward, McDermott said he looked at the makeup of the organization internally and what options may be available. He said the team won’t look outside the organization to bring in a defensive coordinator.

Having his own experience to lean on helped McDermott ultimately land on his decision.

“It’s been done before,” McDermott said. “It’s what I did coming up through and something I’m very comfortable with ... if we come to a deal and it’s like, hey, this isn’t working because of the breadth of the job, in addition to the coordinator piece, then, I’ll turn it over. So, I’m very confident in the people in the room.”
