The San Francisco 49ers have a stacked quarterback room that includes former No.3-overall pick Trey Lance and former No.2-overall pick Sam Darnold but GM John Lynch says Brock Purdy "has earned the right" to be the team's starter in 2023 according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

On one hand, this is a ringing endorsement from Lynch. On the other, you'll find few who disagree with the notion that Purdy earned the right to start next season after 2022's Mr. Irrelevant went 5-0 in the regular season and had the 49ers within a game of the Super Bowl. Currently recovering from a torn UCL suffered in the NFC Championship Game, Purdy isn't expected to be fully cleared until the second week of September per a previous report.

Trey Lance will likely see first-team reps all offseason, and is the early favorite to start in Week 1. Still, Purdy's presence will loom large in the 49ers' locker room once healthy, which could leave Lance on a short leash.
