The San Francisco 49ers expect to be without outside linebacker Aldon Smith for a minimum of five weeks, Albert Breer of NFL.com reports. Just as they got approval from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to put Smith on the non-football injury list, they'll need approval to remove him from it, and that likely will require the blessing of Smith's rehab facility.
The feeling is that Smith eventually will face a two- to four-game suspension, though that won't be assessed until after his DUI case makes it through the court system, which might not happen for a few months or even until the offseason. Smith could later argue that his rehab stint should count as time served.
