Jay Glazer calls out Ben Roethlisberger’s offseason workout routine

Jay Glazer knows the Steelers better than pretty much any national football writer.

His sideline access to players and the team as a whole during training camp is pretty well known. He is a regular on that preseason circuit every year in Latrobe, but stands out even from other prominent media people. And on Wednesday, writing for The Athletic, he took a pretty precise shot at Ben Roethlisberger’s physical conditioning, or lack thereof, Jacob Klinger of Pennlive reports.

“First of all, let’s not put the words fitness and Ben Roethlisberger together, they are allergic to each other,” Glazer wrote in his mailbag. “There is no fitness in Ben Roethlisberger. His idea of a great off-season workout program is doing one yoga session, playing golf and drinking some beer.”

Glazer was asked about the Steelers as a sleeper team this year if Roethlisberger is “back to even 85% plus fitness.”

Roethlisberger himself has been pretty open about his lack of a hard offseason regimen. He told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that part of the reason he’s optimistic about this coming campaign is, in contrast to others, he will actually be working out in the offseason. A couple years ago there was a whole storyline about Steelers players actually seeing Roethlisberger in the weight room, in what was characterized as a new development.

The quarterback is rehabbing from elbow surgery. He told The Post-Gazette that he is throwing without pain for the first time in years, as a result.
