With Jay Ajayi on injured reserve and Darren Sproles ever troubled by hamstring pain, there was speculation the Eagles might trade for a running back.  Corey Clement told general manager Howie Roseman to trust the backs he has, Jack McCaffery of the Daily Times reports.

“This game was definitely a test for us, to see if we need to get somebody,” Clement said. “But I talked to Howie before the game. You have to have confidence in our room. I have confidence in my room. Josh (Adams) does. Wendell does. Sproles. Any other veteran on our team does.

“So we don't have to look on the outside.”

Just the same, the Birds have been considering their options. Among them would be trading with Buffalo for LeSean McCoy, or with the Steelers for Le'veon Bell, who has been inactive during a contract dispute.

Already, there are betting lines that make the Eagles the likeliest landing spot for Bell after the trade deadline. But Clement and Smallwood, who combined for 94 rushing yards Thursday, may slow that trend.

“We know what we have on our team,” Clement said. “And we know what we can win with.”

Such was his message to Roseman.

“I definitely told him that,” Clement said. “He said, 'Make me believe that we don't need a back.' And you've got to take the challenge for what it's worth. It's football. It's the nature of the game. And I believe in the guys in the room that we've got.”
